Yeah, the serotonin syndrome thing you talked about is pretty serious,
but not caused specifically by effexor. As I understand it, it can
happen any time you try to take effexor or any SSRI at the same time as
an MAO inhibitor (or up to 14 days after taking an MAO inhibitor). Side
effects are pretty nasty, up to and including death. I read some stuff
in my wife's drug book (she's a nurse) as well as on WebMD.
Bleeding gums, inability to distiguish reality from imagination,
dry mouth, sesuires and convultions, an uncontrollable urge to talk or move,
depression, anxiety, death, and just about any other thing you can name can all result,
so the moral is to never take an MAO inhibitor with an SSRI (or many other
things). MOA inhibitors are pretty serious business.
