I am really sad to hear you say that everything you have heard about Prozac is bad. I took Prozac for about two years and it really made a difference for me, both for OCD and depression. My doctor has told me that of all the drugs she prescribes, she seems to see the best results with Prozac.
While I was taking Prozac, I lost twenty pounds (a terrific bonus after the birth of my baby!), not because the drug itself caused me to lose weight, but because it removed cravings and that enabled me to stick to a diet. I was also much more energetic and motivated. I found that little things did not stress me as much and my OCD symptoms almost completely disappeared. Needless to say, my husband loved Prozac!
Why did I quit taking it? I discontinued it when I became pregnant for the second time. When I restarted it after giving birth, I found it was not as effective as it had been, so I switched medications. The only side effects I ever had with Prozac were the sexual ones and I only had those at higher dosages.
You really won't know how you react to Prozac (or any other drug) until you try it. Individual reactions to different drugs (even within the same drug class) are extremely variable and a lot of times the process of finding what works seems to be trial and error. If your doctor feels that this might work for you, you might as well give it a try. Perhaps if you ask him to explain to you the reasons he feels Prozac is appropriate in your particular case, you might be reassured.
If Prozac doesn't work for you, there are still many more out there. Sometimes if you can't find one drug that works for you, you may find that a combination will do the trick.
