Julia, I would also look into whether the hypothyroidism is being treated sufficiently. My chronic depression did not get better until my endocrinologist put me on enough synthroid and cytomel to treat the hypothyroid aggressively. That was 9 months ago. Within a few weeks of that, I began to feel better, but the improvement has continued all this time. I had been on thyroid meds for a few years, prescribed by my psychopharmocologist, but not enough to fully treat the problem.
Look at the thyroid and depression folder (link at top of PB page) for more info, including a British Journal of Medicine article that challenges the orthodox adherance to what is considered "normal" on TSH test results, and shows that even a TSH of 2 or higher is highly predictive of later showing more overt hypothyroid symptoms, wheras the initial complaints were "softer" signs, including psychiatric symptoms.
