Washout period/changing meds

I am switching from Effexor to Serzone, and I have been told to go ahead and take 37.5 mg Effexor in the morning and 100 mg Serzone at night. Is it okay to take these drugs in combination? Will taking the Serzone alleviate the withdrawal from the Effexor?
