lisa-my p-doc referred me to the "grandfather" of hypnosis, Herbert Spiegel, of NYC. i saw him for four or five sessions. he hypnotized me and then taught me how to hypnotize myself for anxiety etc. with a hypnotic technique that can be applied to a vast array of things - including depression. it was quite an experience. but one hypno-session, either from him or by me, doesn't have lasting effects - cure depression. like cognitive therapy, you have to keep doing it. some people are more hypnotizable than others -- according to spiegel, who trained surgeons at columbia presbyterian to use hypnosis as anesthesia, it's part physical and part psychological. the physical part has to do, believe it or not, with how high you can roll your eyeballs upward while still keeping your eyes centered, whether they are open or closed. the psychological part has to do with how highly suggestible you are. when i'm really down or anxious i do the process he taught me - it works. but i think meditation or visualization would do a similar thing if you got into it enuf.
