Ultram is a good alternative; it works for some, not for others. It also is used adjunctively to lift mood in treatment resistive depression, so it is a good choice to at least try for someone whose mood may be adversely affected by codeine, hydrocodone, etc.
Talwin is another excellent analgesic, also distinct from the codeine/-codones.
My wife uses ketoprofen, which she tolerates better than ibuprofen. She's also experimenting with some of the new 24-hour anti-arthritics. I hope you find the one that works just right for you.
