My husband, who is very treatment-resistant, is considering participating in a research study using
Vagus Nerve Stimulation (an implanted device that is currently used for epilepsy and may have
anti-depressive effects). 40% of people with severe tx-resistant depression improved with this
device in the first study....which isn't bad given how many other therapies these people had
tried (see http://www.bcm.tmc.edu/psych/mdoc/research/vnsdo1.pdf). There are
20 study sites throughout the country (http://www.cyberonics.com/Depression/default.htm).Good luck.
