Hi, I have tried St.John's Wort briefly (but I'm on birth control now and St.John's reduces it's effectiveness by almost 50% so I can't take it). I have not tried SAM-e yet, it is a bit expensive for me right now, but I am interested in trying it. I will however share with you other things I have tried. If you are into supplements at all and you want to do a little research a good book is "The Prescription for Nutritional Healing". Anyway, often depression is due to nutritional deficiency's, mainly Amino Acids. I take 5-HTP, which is the precursor to L-Tryptophan (which is not on the market anymore for safety reasons). But the 5-HTP safely converts into Serotonin in the brain. I also take L-Tyrosine, which is also for mental alterness. It helps with the dopamine and epinephrine in your brain. I don't know the extent of your illness, but certain people with mental illness should not take this stuff. But for just depression/anxiety it is fine, and it works for me. I would be happy to give you more info if you want. (emclemore@hotmail.com)
I study alternative medicine/nutrition. I try if I can to stay away from Rx drugs. Some things you just can't do with out (like birth control) but most everything can be taken care of with supplments or nutrition. Good luck -Flutter
