MAOI's and SSRI's

Posted by Kalib on September 22, 2000, at 10:52:24

I'm interested to know why it is recommended that MAOI's be taken at least 14 days after the termination of an SSRI? Also, is Selegiline considered an MAOI? I'm interested to try Selegiline as an antidepressant because I've heard that one does not have to alter thier diet to ward off the possibility of a dangerous increase in blood pressure due to MAOI's interaction with tyramine.

I would like to know what the dangers are in combining an MAOI such as Selegiline with an SSRI such as Serzone? Serzone has been effective in alleviating my anxiety related symptoms, but I've not experienced much alleviation in my depressive symptoms. Other SSRI's haven't helped either with regard to my depressive symptoms and have also made me feel lethargic without helping my anxiety related symptoms. Hence, the reason I'd like to try an MAOI and also continue with Serzone. Any thoughts on my queries would surely be appreciated. Thank You, Dennis/Kalib
