Jane--

Stats like those are easier to describe than to find, given that the fed gov't processes data it collects at glacial speed and analyzes it even slower. The "horse's mouth" for this info is at:

www.hcfa.gov/stats/stats.htm

This site is the federal Health Care Finance Administration. You'll have to do some rumaging around (nothing that anyone wants is ever in a nice little package by itself). Also, you might be interested in an article from a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (available online):

Iglehart, JK. "The American Health Care System--Expenditures". NEJM. Jan 7, 1999. Vol. 340, no.1.

Good luck----medlib
