Hi Jason,
Which province do you live in? Some provinces make it easier than others (I'm guessing you may be in Ontario).
To give you a worse case scenario I was in your situation in Ontario. I had no idea how to buy insurance so I didn't - I didn't even realize someone could buy insurance. So I bought my medications. My psychiatrist found out and starting giving me alot of them for free.
At the end of the year, I spent about $800 on drugs. When my father's accountant did my taxes, he said the government gave me back 25-30% of what I paid. So maybe that is a kind of insurance.
Seriously though, if you figure out how an individual buys insurance, please come back to let me know. I have even asked my friends and family back there, and they look at me like I am from outer space.
I am currently living in Alberta, and it's so easy and cheap to get insurance here. Good luck Jason.
