I hesitate to bring this into the discussion but I
will.
The use of peyote and lsd (there are others but these
are representative of past, continuing, and modern
cultures) are attempts at achieving this dissociation,
or, as I prefer to call it (borrowing from Carlos
Castaneda) a separate reality.
I don't advocate recreational use of these substances,
but I do believe they could be used to help one
recognize the state of dissociation.
