In reply to Naltrexone out; Provigil in. p.s. to ant-rock, posted by shellie on June 14, 2000, at 20:51:42
Shellie,
I can certainly relate to your lousy experience with Naltrexone. I too have noticed with myself that an initial lousy reaction pretty accurately predicts a continued lousy reaction in longer trials. In other words, "it gets better with time" just doesn't happen. With me anyway.BUT I have to admit Naltrexone was the one and only exception. It ended up not being of any benefit. But that's another story. The point is that lousy initial feeling did indeed completely go away. It's the only drug I've ever tried where that actually happened.
Whether you quit prematurely or not is anyone's guess. Personally though I'm like you. If it sucks the first day, forget it. I know our physicians tell us otherwise, but like I said, I have NEVER seen my own lousy initial reactions or side effects get better with time. I know it happens with some people, but not me.
I really like the fact that my doctor has never pushed me into continuing a drug I'm not comfortable with. I think that's because he was always on the lookout for a superior match for me. Not just a good drug, but the superior one. Superior matches are hardly ever characterized by initial lousy reactions. On the contrary, superior matches are characterized by dramatic initial improvement instead. In my own trials, I have noticed that the jump between a good drug and a superior one is quite astonishing. It's a huge dramatic leap from good to superior.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Just wanted to say I hear ya, I can relate. Hopefully Provigil will turn out better. If not, Adrafinil would be a wonderful next choice I think. I've tried both. Even though they are supposedly similar, I can tell you first hand they are not. They are as different as night and day. Adrafinil to me was by far the kindest, gentlest, and most effective med. Provigil on the other hand was rude and crude. It's hard for me to even think of them as being in the same class with each other. So if Provigil doesn't work out, don't despair. You're another step closer to that superior med, whatever it is. For me...Adrafinil.
