Hi Joanna,
I take 1000mg/Depakote a day for BPD, and I definitely had the munchies for the first few weeks I was taking it. That side effect totally went away for me, and I didn't gain any weight from the DEpakote. I also take 2.5 mg Zyprexa, and, despite the fact that it has worked wonders for me, it is the appetite stimulator from hell (for me). For the first month I was on it, I was STARVING. I literally could not get full and I dreamed about food at night. Notably, I even dreamed about foods I don't eat, like huge ham dinners (I'm a vegetarian!)...Luckily, I am now able to manage that side effect by adding a drug that counteracts some of the side effects of older, "typical" anti-psychotics. Oddly enough, by adding this 3rd med, the Zyprexa munchies went away. But hang in there with the DEpakote. For me, the munchies went away and my weight remained stable.
> I'm getting off of valium after about 10 years because even after 25mg I still feel hyper. My pdoc is tapering me off a 5mg a day and at my request added depakote. I tried my son's lithium and his depakote and they both worked better than the valium. My moods are more stable. I have a lot more patience and I don't feel overwhelmed all the time but I'm STARVING. I don't know if it's a little low blood sugar from stress(you know, life) or its the depakote. Do you get the munchies on depakote? Any ideas?
