SAM-e works, sort of...

Posted by Danny on May 22, 2000, at 2:17:40

Like a lot of people on here, I feel like I'm between a rock and another rock. I've had depression/anxiety for the last ten years, off and on. I have Irritable bowel syndrome, low weight (sometimes use wheelchair for foot pain) and some kind of related tachycardia (heart checks out ok), which means that tricyclics are bad news (just tried Doxepin). Paxil (4 years) and Luvox (2 months) seem to have pooped out-no improvement with higher doses. Have also tried Celexa, Effexor, Remeron (worked, but worsened gi problems), Zoloft, Serzone, some of these twice. Sedating AD's seem to work best for me. My psychiatrist put me through the antipsychotic merry-go-round Mellaril, Zyprexa etc., which just induced unpleasant sedation. Between gi side efx and tachycardia side efx, my choices have disappeared. I have a very strict diet, which depends partly on avocados for calories-which seems to exclude mao meds. I've had a little success with SAME, but it seems to be worsening my insomnia (gi pain at night). I'm only taking 200mg. a day. Has anyone taken this over a long period? Other obscure suggestions? Also tried Buspar, Neurontin and St. Johns. I'm beginning to think I may have to tough it out. Depression improves when I gain weight (and thereby energy), but this is difficult. Just blabbing on and on. thanks.
