In reply to mental status changes with neurontin, posted by Ellen on May 14, 2000, at 8:08:38
> Does Neurontin cause mental status changes? A patient I cared for was given Neurontin 2400 mg for chronic pain. He was having trouble with short term memory, word finding, he could not use the phone correctly. Another patient told me she "became wacky" on neurontin. Both were geriatric patients with many health problems.
It sure can! I've seen it referred to as "dementia
in a pill" and my personal experience backs that
up. At 1200 mg I had a very hard time reading and
actually became lost while driving in my own town.
I can't imagine 2400mg unless I was having a serious
hypomania, in which case 2400mg would be ok for a
few weeks but then need to be lowered...S.
