In reply to STILL LOOKING FOR LONGTERM LAMICTAL, posted by Amanda S on March 30, 2000, at 23:54:38
Amanda,
I took lamotrigene for right at two years with none of the side effects that are being discussed. I would have to check my records for specific doses, etc. I had to completely stop to start ECT.
It was not a miracle drug for me, but I kept taking it, as it's one of the few mood stabilizers that have agreed with me. ADs worsen my mood in the long run, so there was a question about whether the Lamictal could be doing the same thing because of it's antidepressant effect (a weak inhibitory effect on the 5-HT3 receptor). It is still a medication to be careful with. I took care of a patient once with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and have utmost respect for any agent that could be causative. It certainly holds a lot of promise for those with bipolar.I wish you well,
Chris A.
