Gloria,
I get more depressed, more lethargic and more neurotic when on ANY SSRI antidepressant drug.
I think there are very different types of depression, depending upon which neurotransmitters in our brains are malfunctioning. SSRIs work on the Seratonin receptors, which I believe are NOT my problem. When I take those drugs, I feel as if I could sleep for eternity...and like it. This sort of behaviour, however, is not conducive to having a real life. So, I need to be trying a different category of antidepressants in order to get better. There are those drugs that work on blocking Dopamine reuptake, which I have had the best luck with and some that help in the area of Norepinephrine (sp?).
Try different types, with the help of your doctor. Be very descriptive as to how you are feeling. Be willing to go through a hellish couple of weeks, as you try each new med. (I would rather be tortured, but this part is sometimes necessary). Become better equipped to make suggestions, by doing your research (on the internet).
My uneducated guess is this - based on personal experience and that of others: Seratonin drugs (SSRIs) work well for those who have anxiety and insomnia in their symptoms. Dopamine active drugs work more for those of us with lack of joy, fatigue and over sleeping.
Best to you. Hang in there. When you come upon the right combo, it will get better.
Karen
