I've taken my son to a local (Dallas) neurologist who leaned toward mania to explain his behavioral problems (displays of anger that are sudden, impulsive and hostile). Now, we're seeing a psychologist who seems to lean toward ADD. The questions:
1. How can we tell if he has a manic-type disorder as opposed to (or in addition to) ADD?2. What differences would it make in the selection of his treatment options? I imagine different types of therapy are more effective in one case as opposed to the other, and it sounds as if the selection and efficacy of drugs differs as well.
3. What differences would it make in the appearance/promotion of drug side effects? I get the impression that, for example, a manic child is more prone to suffer different effects of different severity when on Ritalin than a non-manic child with ADD would experience.
4. What differences would it make in his long-term prognosis and strategies for treatment, education, etc.?
Any insights to help me worry less (or more)?
