Reading about people's experiences with Reboxetine got me to reading through the press release about its status with the FDA. I was also thinking about amisulpride and the general stupidity the FDA can exhibit. I remembered that Dr. Ivan's site had a link offering an analysis of problems with the FDA. The writer was a fellow of the Cato Institute, and I don't agree with his ultimate conclusion. He really seemed to be arguing that there should be no FDA and that the private sector would fill the agency's role. There were a couple of interesting bits related to psychotropic medications. One was particularly interesting in light of the current reboxetine issue. Prozac was nearly rejected on efficacy grounds in 1989. That is, in controlled studies Prozac was no better at reducing depressive symptoms (probably the Hamilton scale) than the tricyclics. I find it terribly ironic that now Reboxetine might be rejected, because it does not seem to be superior to Prozac.
