> I have been reviewing some of the old threads and decided I would take the topomax thats been sitting with all the other meds for about 2 weeks. Only thing is the doctor thinks I need remeron because of my obsseive thoughts about getting killed and reaching the pearly gates of heaven. I didn't like the reviews on remeron. I am taking lamictal and like one person says it causes you to stutter sometimes. I just want to know if the topomax will help take away those unrelenting thoughts. Anybody out there can help, it sure would be appreciated and one other important issue. Has anyone had any problems having a drink or two with topamax?
Amanda - The manufacturer says don't drink alcohol with Topamax because the possible interactions have not been scientifically evaluated (lawyers at work). I say that it is not a good idea to drink alcohol when you are starting any drug, at least until you are stabilized on it. Alcohol, because of its dehydrating effect on the body (due to inhibition of ADH) may skew blood levels and you may not get an accurate response from the Topamax. Also, Topamax can cause memory/concentration problems and confusion in the titration phase. The rule of thumb is to start with a low dose (25-50mg daily) and increase by only 25mg per week until you reach the level your doctor wants you at (about 150 to 400mg). Raising the dose too fast can frustrate you and that doesn't help with compliance. Raising the dose slowly minimizes the chance of getting these side effects. Good luck - Cam W.
