Benzodiazepines and respiratory depression

Posted by Irene Mazis on February 1, 2000, at 15:09:02

In tapering my benzo dose (4.0 Xanax and 1.0 Rivotril)),
I have noticed an interesting phenomenon.

For several years I depended on the above dose because
I had a bout of hypothyroidism (non-complied with my lithium
and Synthroid dose which was high I think 0.150). I had
was taking benzos for panic attacks.

Now that I am tapering I find that the panic attacks and
other benzo-related symptoms are beginning to abate. I
suspect that the Xanax at least, brought panic attacks on
account of respiratory depression.

One strange thing I have not been able to resolve is
the "slamerino" effect. By that I mean, that in trying
to taper down, while keeping lithium and Synthroid constant,
I got severe dyspnea, and the chokes, almost like a heart
attack. I should mention that my Synthroid dose has been
reduced, 0.112, and I am relying on this to make my
tapering of benzos easier and eventually panic-free.

Anyone in a similar situation who wishes to exchange
ideas, please let me know.

Thanks

Squigg
