Explaining Polypharm

Posted by Noa on January 24, 2000, at 17:53:52

Do others here find that people react to hearing you're on a bunch of meds?

Today, there was a blood drive at work, so I went to give. I must admit I wasn't sure if the lithium would disqualify me, but it didn't. However, in the course of the interview, we had to go through all my meds one by one. The technician had to look each one up to see if it was ok. When we finished, she commented, in a polite and friendly way, on how many meds I take. She asked, "Do you feel you really need to take all of them?" I said yes, and explained that it is common for people to have a combination of medications, that they work together. I expained that sometimes the medications have to be combined with others because taking a higher dose of one might cause unwanted effects. I said someday, we will have custom-made pills that will combine the different meds we need in the right proportions, and then we'll only have to take one thing.

It used to be such a difficult issue for me, taking so many meds. I guess I just got to a point when I realized how dangerous my illness is and that I need the polypharm approach. Plus, it helps to have all you guys here who are familiar with it.
