In reply to Anyone using anti-depressants for IBS?, posted by Kris on January 17, 2000, at 16:18:57
> Hi. I was wondering if anyone here is using anti-depressants for Irritable Bowel Syndrome? I have been reading about the effects of Anti-depressants with the treatment of IBS, and the studies say that there is quite an improvement. I was wondering if anyone here has had positive/negative experiences with that. I would like to have some idea of which medication is right for treating the nervousness, and anxiety that accompanies IBS. I'm making an appointment with my doctor to discuss this option, as I feel I would really benefit from it...I would just like to know what, if anything, has worked for IBS, so I can start my journey better informed. Thank you so much for all of your help.
> Sick of IBS!Hi Kris
I've had IBS for 12 years and antidepressants have been a big help for IBS-related anxiety. It's tough recommending a certain drug-everyone has different reactions. I would recommend trying the newer drugs (Effexor, Serzone & Celexa)first. These tend to have much fewer side effects
than older AD's. I also recommend www.ibsgroup.org as a very useful, current support page. best of luck.
