well the AMA has a board to check basic things like where he went to school, etc. then your state has a board to see if he's been sanctioned. another way is to see if/what insurance companies he (or the group) accepts, then check the insurance board. like in CA, we have pacificare, and their site www.pacificare.com has all kind of info on each physician, and will provide more on the phone. another standard way is to simply ask the nurses at your clinic what they think about him.
As an ex-wife of a physician, I've found that drs. who practice at clinics tend to be more altruistic than others, the ones who graduate at the bottom of their classes tend to land up practicing at prisons (really!) and other places that have difficulty recruiting physicians.
