normal people can't afford air time

Lots of people DO hear the stories from "normal" people, but they are mostly local stories. A celeb sound 'bite' will resonate in the media for quite some time (esp with follow-ups, if any, and other celebs jumping on various and sundry bandwagond).
One isn't more valuable than the other, just better aired.
