In reply to Amineptine and /or Wellbutrin, posted by pat on October 3, 1999, at 13:14:31
I have experience with amineptine. I took it for about 6 months. I also took wellbutrin before that. While wellbutrin did help my energy, it didn’t enhance my mood, so I can relate with you there. By the way, Wellbutrin does effect dopamine, but I don’t think that is its main avenue of action.
Amineptine is a mixed bag. It improved my mood, especially at first, but it had some side effects that didn’t allow me to take the recommended dose (100-200mgs.). Side effects at the recommended dosage included irritability, impatience, rushed thoughts and visual distortions. At a smaller dosage of 50mgs. however I experienced some euthymia (at first) and increased energy with only mild anxiety and visual distortions as the side effects.
Concerning amineptine’s abuse potential, there is a little more too it than spontaneous orgasms. I have seen that website that says amineptine has the ability to do that with some people but I haven’t seen that mentioned anywhere else. There are numerous reports of people abusing amineptine. That is, taking approx. 1400 mgs./day over a period of months. Whether they are taking it orally or snorting it I don’t know. What the ‘high’ is I don’t know either, but it does tend to be taken by persons who have or who are concurrently abusing amphetamines. Such high doses are dangerous. There are reports of people with horrible skin lesions due to pustules developing under the skin. Others have died due to liver failure.
This is why amineptine is considered to have abuse potential and not licensed for marketing in the US, UK and other countries. Perhaps amineptine has gotten a bad rap because of its misuse by a few people. Regardless, its abuse potential will make it less likely that a doctor in the US will give out a prescription for it. However you can order from overseas without a prescription from an international mail order pharmacy. I think IAS (International Antiaging Systems), offers amineptine at a reasonable price. They have a website. Like you said, all this is perfectly legal. You are allowed to import a three month supply for personal use. If you decide to do this I suggest you inform your psychiatrist so he can monitor you. Use great caution whenever combining med.s, i.e. wellbutrin and amineptine.
The reason I don’t take amineptine anymore is that I have found a medicine that works better, much better, for me. For almost 3 months I have been taking amisulpride with good effect. My mood is good, I am able to enjoy the pleasures of life, my anxiety is low, I have good energy and the medicine isn’t giving me side effects. I ordered the medicine from overseas after convincing my psychiatrist to write out a prescription. There have been many studies done on amisulpride that show its safety and efficacy.
How does amisulpride work? Amisulpride acts on dopamine just as amineptine, but it is more selective than amineptine. It stimulates only a subgroup of the dopamine receptors, the D2-D3 receptors, especially the D2-D3s in the limbic system. This is significant because the D2-D3 limbic receptors are thought to have a role in mood and motivation.
If you want more info. on amisulpride including abstracts of studies done on it that you can show to your psychiatrist, just e-mail me at andrewb@seanet.com and I will send you the information.
Best of health.
