I haven't been on Remeron, so I can't speak for that particular med. But I did put on weight with higher doses of Lithium. In some ways I feel like I got crazier having my body balloon around when I was eating the same things as always. At some point I stopped caring about what food I put in my body. Or maybe I stopped being able to care. I'm finally back to working my 12 Step Program. I've put on over 60 lbs in the last 9 months. It could be partially the meds, it could be hypothyroid (which I just got diagnosed), but more then anything else it's a predisposition on my part to use food like a drug. I'm NOT trying to tell you that you might or might not be the same as me. Rather these meds are powerful. They alter our brain chemistry, our thoughts, our behaviors, our actions, and even our potential. Keep in mind that Remeron may be the best med for you, and that you may need to address the weight gain in other ways. It's not uncommon from what I've read for people to get on these meds, get stabilized, and find themselves with different priorities and problems. If I were you, I would talk to my doctors, both general health and psychiatric; and do some research on Remeron. Get yourself informed. Knowledge is power. And remember that diabetics don't just start taking insulin. They too have a life-threatening disease. Life-style changes in case like ours are a necessary part of getting and staying healthy.
