I'm no expert, but here's my understanding.

The term psychosis is used to describe a state
of mind where you are detached from reality.
Hearing voices or thinking the FBI has bugged
your dental work would be symtoms of a psychosis.

The term neurosis is apparently losing favor these days
because it is too unspecific and in a way, reflects
an outdated way of thinking of behaviour. A person
with obsessive/compulsive disorder or panic might
have been called "neurotic" in the past.
