Hormone levels can be tested by a blood test (there is also a saliva test, but I'm not sure if it is as reliable). If you are having periods, the most thorough approach is to test on day 1 and day 20 of your cycle, as estrogen and progesterone vary throughout the month. You may have to be somewhat assertive to get these tests done; I had trouble finding a doctor who would do them, but going on HRT has been a big help for me.
