It depends a lot on what kind of therapist you choose, but in general, it's a relationship in which you talk about what troubles you and develop more satisfying and comfortable ways to experience/think/feel about yourself and the world. There are some books available that explain the various types of therapy (can't remember any titles, but amazon.com or something silimar would turn them up). There are also some threads here about "choosing a therapist" posted last month. And talking with your therapist about what you want from therapy and how s/he approaches therapy would be a good place to start the process.
