William, I think you were coming from a well meaning
place, but I agree with the other posters, that exercise
isn't a cure for the disease depression. I have
always exercised regularly both when I didn't take meds
and when I did. The only thing I noticed about
exercise when I was depressed (and not on meds) was
that I felt like shit all day--then I'd force myself
to exercise--afterwards I'd feel "normal" and somewhat
"happy" for maybe half an hour or so, then after the
exercise high wore off, I'd feel like shit again.
I think you are probably like most people who don't
suffer from clinical depression--you just don't have
a real understanding of the disease. And that's
understandable b/c I think it's really hard to understand
when you haven't experienced it. That's why this
forum is a comfort--people here really know what's it's
like and they don't have to worry about being judged
or misunderstood. I think excercise is great idea
whether you're depressed or not--it most definately
will help you feel healthier, but it's definately not
a cure for depression. I really, really wish it were
that simple, with all my heart :-)
