During our first session, he kept calling me "Mrs. Smith," although that is not my name, and I corrected him several times. I sat on an orange, vinyl couch that made a crinkling sound when I moved and that reeked of cigarette smoke. I could only see this psychiatrist for 15 minutes (even on the initial session) and he kept giving me Zoloft, even though I eventually was diagnosed as bipolar. Needless to say, I was pinging off the walls on unopposed Zoloft. He simply attributed my symptoms to side effects and said they'd wear off. I spent most of the 15 minutes listening to his personal philosophies about Freud, the tour de France, places to visit in Europe, his favorite wines, etc. He was nuttier than I was, and he had this awful eye tic that drove me crazy, you know, the kind that looks deliberate, like someone is winking at you. (Remember, I was the patient.) Luckily, we got better health insurance and I was able to see a Real psychiatrist who had a wonderful demeanor and who recognized in 3 minutes what was wrong with me. He prescribed Depakote, and that changed my life for the better forever. In psychiatry, personality is everything. If you can't relate to people, what's the point?
