> I am battling chronic depression. I was on Prozac for a year and I felt so much better. It quit working. I have been on several medications without sucess. My doctor has now prescribed 60mg of Prozac, 1 Effexor XR 75mg and 1 300mg of Lithium carbonate a day. Is this normal to take all this medication. I just started and I don't know if it works or not. Let me know what you think.
I think that if you are bothered by the number of medications you are taking, you might do well to ask your doctor for more information about what each one is supposed to do. I can give you my guesses as to what s/he had in mind, but bear in mind they are only guesses. (I'm not a professional, BTW.)
- Prozac: because it worked for you before
- Effexor: maybe to augment the Prozac
- lithium: this augments antidepressants and also can prevent recurrences of depression in the long termAs for whether it's "normal," lots of people do take several medications for hard-to-treat depression.
Take care.
