Well, it's newer than Prozac. I think it's been around since '94 or so. It's hardly brand new, experimental, or anything like that, though.

It tends to be more sedating and less likely to cause the initial "jitters" that some people get from SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.). It also causes fewer sleep problems and less sexual dysfunction. It can make some people too drowsy during the day, and it also sometimes causes dizziness and blurred vision.

People who get agitated when they first start an antidepressant should definitely go down to a lower dose and then work their way up slowly. This is a common problem, especially with people who are being treated for anxiety or panic disorder.

Are you seeing a regular physician rather than a psychiatrist, by any chance? A psychiatrist might be more willing to try things other than the SSRIs. You might ask for a referral.
