Help me with this problem

Posted by linkadge on October 16, 2003, at 9:23:20

I have suffered from major depression for a while.

Every now and then I try to go off my medication, and I end up a horrible mess. Anyhow everytime I go back on them I end up where I am now.

I feel better, but at the same time I feel like God abandoned me. Part of recovery from depression is finding a way to connect to god, but each time I try and recover it becomes harder and harder, because I feel as if God doesn't really care about me. I also feel guilty about the swearing, the cursing, the blaming of God.

I just can help but wonder what happens to those who could never acess medication, how utterly separated from God they must feel.

Has anyone had similar thoughts ? Can anyone help me?

First, read Job...then the Psalms...

...and you'll get a pretty good idea of what clinical depression must have been like in the days before meds.

Secondly, stay on your meds (assuming your doctor agrees)...there is no more reason to go off depression meds than there is to go off insulin as a diabetic. It may take months or years, and it may take a change in meds, but with prayer and meds you'll get there.

Thirdly, try to find a Christian therapist (not just a clergyperson, but someone trained in psychotherapy). I found that very helpful when I expereinced what you are talking about.

Good luck!

I suppose I'm lucky. When I get depressed, my connection to God slips away, but I don't much care. Apathy rules. At least I never get angry with Him.

I'm sorry, it must be very painful for you. Tovah is right. Job has never been a favorite of mine, but the Psalms are full of beautiful struggles with belief.
