PEA working (with MAOI) (stopped meds)

Posted by linkadge on July 9, 2021, at 11:48:07

So, I wanted (for the heck of it) to try a full alternative approach. I stopped my meds and am taking the following:

Methylfolate
Rhodiola / Licorice (for MAOI action)
Tryptophan
Niacin / Magnesium
Omega 3
Tiny amounts of PEA (from dropper bottle)

It's only been a few days, but I am noticing some very significant improvements. My emotions are positive but there is a much deeper sense of peace. This morning I had flashbacks to some extremely old and deep positive memories from my past. I am NOT recommending doing this cold turkey (disclaimer), but I just can't take standard antidepressants anymore. They were barely working for me and just leaving me numb with heart palpitations.

I had lovely results with polygala tenuifolia. But I am so reactive I could not continue.

Hi Linkadge:

I think that is awesome that you have found a formula that works. And, that is the point of all of our experimentation's,get a synchronized combo that works!! I don't think it matters if it is raw herbal. vitamin, or a human-made chemical. We only have so long on this planet, so damn the torpedoes, and I say go for it.

BTW, have you ever visited bluelight.org? It is a, well, 'psychonaught' (lol) discussion of the use of almost every chemical ever available! I find it very informative..and it follows what we call 'harm reduction'. That is, making your journey safest possible, and having a discussion around what is safe, and not. Even though it is anecdotal, for the most part, I have read many case-studies, on pubmed, with 2 or 3 people's experience being used as scientific evidence.

And, remember, our minds and bodies are in a constant state of flux. I think we have to often change out chemicals to make us less-stressed, and comfortable.

Happy Sailing :)

Best,

Jay

I like your regimen. Which meds did you stop? Do you have trouble with the tryptophan? It needs to be taken on an empty stomach, because other nutrients compete with it at the blood brain barrier?

How much tryptophan?

In theory, you can boost serotonin without limits with 5-HTP. It is one step closer to Serotonin than Tryptophan. Advisable? Maybe not. Especially not with MAOI.

I take 220mg of tryptophan. The reason I like tryptophan over 5-htp is that tryptophan is broken down to a variety of active metabolites which can promote neurogenesis (i.e. n-acetyl-serotonin, indoles). Some of this takes place in the gut.

I basically stopped effexor, ritalin and mirtazapine. I am still taking a small amount of lithium (forgot to say that).

Bold move. I proceed more cautiously, although I will be off all antidepressants shortly. Neuroleptics are another topic. They need to be tapered more slowly for sure.

I didnt know about the Tryptophan metabolites. 5-HTP is plant based though, which I usually prefer over fermentation based compounds. More natural.

Once im off Venlafaxine for a few days, I plan to ramp up the 5-HTP.

But 5-htp itself is not exactly natural. I know it exists (in very small amounts) in certain foods, but nowhere near the quantity in supplements. Not that this means anything by itself.

It is body native though. Yeah, I wouldn't avoid Tryptophan or think that it is less healthy than 5-HTP. I just would be bothered that other nutrients compete with Tryptophan at the blood-brain-barrier. I guess it wouldn't be a problem to take both?

I don't know about less healthy. You can get grams of tryptophan in your diet, but 5-htp is not really in the diet. It may raise serotonin levels to unnatural levels whereas tryptophan likely won't do that.

It gets decarboxylated to the trace amine tryptamine. I don't know if that is active on the trace amine receptors and/or releases monoamines, but it *would* be intuitive if tryptamine *were* to serotonin and MDMA what phenylethylamine (PEA) is to dopamine and (meth)amphetamine.

I guess the point was that "natural" in itself does not necessarily mean "healthier".

That said, I do prefer natural myself if it is a reasonable alternative in a situation.

Yeah if I can, I will try to get plant based, food native or at least body native nutrients. In the case of Serotonin precursors, you cant have both plant based and food native. Its either or.

That is what I meant.

linksdge, would you expect either 5-HTP or Tryptophan to make people tired during the day via Melatonin?

Why is that? I'm not sure I get what food native means.

The trace amines (tryptamine and PEA) activate TAAR1 which may have antidepressant effects in their own right.

As far as I know every protein (diary, chicken etc. etc.) contains Tryptophan. It is an essential nutrient. We cant live without it. We are fine without 5-HTP though.

Tryptophan supplements are made by fermentation. 5-HTP is extracted from a plant.

HUGE.

State-specific memory? You describe exactly what I experienced early when I first began to improve with the addition of Nardil.

Gosh, I hope this is the one for you. It would be a remarkable exercise of your knowledge and logic. I truly hope that I can congratulate you in a few weeks.

When the time comes, I would love to know what you took into consideration when you put your treatment regime together.

The PEA still seems to be helping (especially with the feelings of deadness). I actually had to reduce the licorice as I was getting some hypertension (especially after administering the PEA).

The PEA is very powerful for me. I'll keep you updated.
