Can 5-htp be taken with antidepressants?

Posted by mogger on July 4, 2021, at 9:46:58

My Dr. is adamant that it is safe to combine meds and 5-htp. Does anyone agree with this? There is an interesting article on using it as adjunct for Treatment Resistant Depression.

5-HTP can potentiate serotonin reuptake inhibitors, so with this class of antidepressants, caution is advised. Remember that it is the dose that makes the poison.

5htp in low doses, like 50mg capsule would not hurt, i take prozac 80mg maximum dose and i had no problems with serotonin syndrome....but if you take 4 serogentic meds that would be another story, a very low dose of 5htp replenishes serotonin but if more than couple serotonin meds that would be risky.

4 serotonergic ones + 5HTP sounds like a little too much.

Right now I am just microdosing because I am not completely off of antidepressants. Got some heart issues (at least that is what I think). It may be caused by excess iron. Or 5-htp. That is why microdosing. I will find out in a few days if it is Iron.

All I can say is it seems that I can now give antidepressants a miss without my mood deteriorating. Before I could not. I am on a pretty comprehensive orthomolecular regimen though. 5-HTP does not relly work in isolation. It relies on other nutrients to transform into Serotonin.

When I know more and I got off the rest of Venlafaxine, I may try higher doses. I get a bad impression when I feel my pulse under duress. Hope it will subside.

It is awesome that you are so aware of your condition at all times and can feel when things are amiss. I know life extension is a highly trusted brand. I am going to look into it!

I abandoned the remaining 18mg of Venlafaxine and now tolerate much more 5-HTP without any heart issues that I noted. Taking 25mg couple times a day. Not sure if I will ultimately feel better, the same or worse. I sure could further ramp up 5-HTP more but I first want Venlafaxine to leave my system. Feeling a bit irritated.

Im not too tired yet. But that is a concern for me as well. Might be Melatonin that is produced from Serotonin. As a sleep aid, melatonin pooped out quickly.

Im sure there will be pros and cons. At some point I justhave to decide if the pros outweigh the cons or not.
