L-theanine

Posted by Escapee on September 24, 2016, at 10:35:12

Always up for something new! So I purchased a 50g pouch of L-theanine.

As an anxiety sufferer I'm always looking for things to decrease it.

I have drank lots of tea in my time so kinda know what it feels like. At least in combination with caffeine. But tea also contains D-theanine, L-glutamine & tannic acid (tannin) amongst other phytochemicals including antioxidants like catechins.

Thought I would try it in isolation. Dont know why I never tried it before.

Just taken it with a 250ml can of energy drink containing 75mg caffeine, Taurine & gaurana extract. The usual crap they put in it.

I've read that caffeine & L-theanine work in sink so taking caffeine with it is a valid experiment! lol

I do feel a little calmer. Been a hectic morning for my brain. Woke up with a stonking hangover this morn. Didn't exactly help my eye either! I have a spot on the inside of my eyelid which is very painful. Started yesterday. Taking antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops. My eye is constantly weeping tears and I have to wear shades coz I cant bear the light. But I'm not wearing them now.

Paracetamol didn't help my hangover, caffeine helped a bit. Found some ibuprofen which made more of a difference. Now its gone. Hmm...

Great site this! https://examine.com/supplements/theanine/

Found it during many searches but never used it directly. I've joined now. Best thing is most subjects are full of references to back up the claims.

Hello Escapee.

I see you are still taking Nardil (45mg?). How is it treating you? How long have you been taking it?

I've been at 60mg for a few days now (following a few weeks at 45mg) and plan to stay there. I haven't yet responded this time but believe I will within a couple weeks. I'm at that place you talked about in an earlier thread where I feel a bit speedy. Hoping the A/D effect is to follow/replace this.

I would be interested to know what you are experiencing :)

Oops! I just saw you posted above (Nardil 9/25) and answered my questions. Hope things improve for you. May I ask why you had to drop your dose below 45mg?

Thanks for the interest! Nice to know I'm not alone!

To answer your question as to why I dropped a dose:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20160819/msgs/1092324.html

Theres a whole ongoing thread you can read. Most are updates but there is also some valuable info which others and myself have talked about.

I hope everything goes smoothly for you! Are you taking anything else with the Nardil? May I ask whats your diagnosis and your main reason for you and/or your doc choosing Nardil?

You can post a reply on the above thread if you like. Will keep things tidy :)
Just remember to include a link to this thread if poss.

Nope you're not alone. Nardil can be a struggle that's for sure!

Yikes! That's rough!

I will post on that thread as well.

Its been almost a week at 60mg and I feel yuck. Thinking about going back to 45mg, not so speedy. My diagnosis is MDD and we chose Nardil as I had run out of things to try and my pdoc is a fan of MAOI's.

I was taking Klonopin and Zyprexa but d/c'd them both a few weeks ago. I'm wondering if I'm still in w/d. This might explain why I'm not getting results at 60mg. Maybe its too much? I dunno.

I think you said you went back up to 60mg. How's that going?

Sorry that you're not getting the results you hoped for so far. Some people get the 'light switch' effect from Nardil, for others the effect can come on more gradually. How long since you started it?

Perhaps you came off the Klonopin too quick and/or you are experiencing anxiety/stress as a result of stopping? Nardil is anxiolitic (GABAergic) so it should help. Maybe adding back a small dose of Klonopin might help. Say 0.5mg thrice daily until the Nardil hopefully kicks in. Just a thought.

I'm still on Klonopin despite starting Nardil. I really need my social anxiety out of the way. I'm taking Lyrica too for my anxiety.

So you were on Zyprexa for your MDD? I'm not too clued up on APs, but I know some of them are used to augment ADs particularly the atypical ones. And some, like Seroquel can even be effective for depression alone. Did Zyprexa help your depression? Or was it used for something else?

I take it you also suffer with anxiety as you were taking Klonopin right?

Bit confused as to why you were not taking an AD if you suffer with MDD.

Going back to 45mg Nardil might help. What side effects are you dealing with right now?

I have actually gone back to 45mg Nardil, up from 30mg which I dropped to because of said side effect. I already feel better after my dose of 22.5mg i took this morning. I also took 7.5mg last night. But surprise surprise the urine retention has come back almost instantly. So I will forget the 7.5mg at night for the time being. Making a total daily dose of only 37.5mg Not exactly ideal, but what else can I do?

I will be asking for bethanocol when I next see my doc in 2 weeks. Wiki says its used for urine retention caused by ADs but there is no reference for it.
I also found another class of medications (called alpha receptor blockers) that work by relaxing the muscles at the neck of the bladder, thus reducing the obstruction to the flow of urine. The common medications in this class are terazosin (Hytrin), tamsulosin (Flomax), doxazosin (Cardura), silodosin (Rapaflo), and alfuzosin (Uroxatral). These medications are generally used for treating long-standing obstructive symptoms due to enlarged prostate, but they may have a role in treating acute obstruction.

Yes I copied and pasted most of the above paragraph lol :)

2 weeks 45mg, 1 week 60mg. I'm suspecting I have low bp and/or low blood sugar. I've lost 20lbs in the last month or so. Zero appetite. Not healthy, I know.

>

Probably true. I had a seizure the first time I attempted to d/c'd it.

It helped with my depression as a monotherapy (along with Klonopin).

Yes.

Tried them all.

>

Anxiety, fatigue, weakness, sweating.

I hope one of the above will help you with your problem! Looks like its the only way you'll be able to increase your Nardil dose.

Thanks for answering my questions Jade. Helps myself and others understand your situation a bit more.

The only advice I can give you right now is just to hold on. Everyones different and it could take up to 6 weeks to make a difference. Maybe you increased too quickly, maybe not. No right or wrong answers. Just trial and error. But if your side effects are really getting to you and you are sure its all from the Nardil then maybe dropping to 45mg for a week might help.

I dont know how you feel about adding a small daily dose of Klonopin back in until you get a positive response from the Nardil. Might make things a bit more bearable. Obviously run it past your doc first.

And IF you dont get the response you hoped for from the Nardil after 5-6 weeks it doesn't necessarily mean you should drop it. The odd tweak here & there may be all it needs. And as you said your doc is a fan of Nardil, I'm sure he will have a few tricks up his sleeve!

Keep posting!
