Brintellix, Fetzima or Viibryd to replace Zoloft?

Posted by mogger on February 6, 2015, at 21:15:48

zoloft has been great for my OCD/depression over the years but as I get older it is having a great impact on my sexual dysfunction. I didn't notice until I recently got into a relationship and had great difficulty sexually. I have tried decreasing zoloft and a few other tricks but just can't see any benefits without a significant drop in mood and worsening OCD. He mentioned that Fetzima, Brintellix or Viibryd have anti anxiety properties and could help minus the ssri side effects. Has anyone had any experience in this area? Many thanks,

mogger

Hey, mogger!

I am very knowledgeable about all these meds. I actually take Zoloft and Brintellix concomitantly, and I've studied Viibyrd and Fetzima.

I would eliminate Fetzima as an option for you. I'm also an advocate of Brintellix being an augmentation agent rather than a first-line drug. This leaves you with Viibyrd which I think is your best option. It is purported to have less sexual side effects and it has similar SSRI properties to your sertraline so it would be an easy crossover.

I suggest the vilazodone. Good luck!

The reason I don't suggest Fetzima is because its mechanism of action is entirely different from SSRIs like your sertraline. It does effect serotenergic but it has a lot of NE effect. A 2:1 ratio, I believe. It is also not as proven to be effective as other medicines.

Brintellix seems like it would be a blockbuster, but it seems to be getting poor reviews, but this could be attributed to it being prescribed to those with treatment-resistant depression since at this point, it seems to be a second or fourth-line drug. It helps me out. I can get out of bed easier since taking it.

I still suggest the Viibyrd. It has some effects similar to Buspirone which could help you and it is purported to have less sexual side effects while remaining an SSRI like Zoloft. I don't see why it would hurt to switch over to it.

Thanks so much for the advice. I shall try Viibryd then. Wish me luck!

If you do switch, feel free to start a thread about your experience with vilazodone. :)

Brintellix is an ssri that does a bunch of other things like agonize 5ht1a and 5ht1b receptors, which help minimize sexual side effects.

Vybrid is an ssri that partially agonizes 5ht1a receptors. It worked real well for my OCD and I did not experience any sexual side effects.

I as well couldn't take just Brintellix on it's own...had to use it as an augmenter. At higher doses I lost a lot of interest/enjoyment in things in general and I never really smiled. Acted somewhat like an antipsychotic for me.

Viibryd however put me in a better mood but it knocked me out come afternoon. I needed to take ritalin daily just to keep going.

Wish me luck. Starting to taper off zoloft and go on Brintellix today. Thanks for the feedback.

Good luck. I have also made a Zoloft to Brintellix switch, but I found it works better as an augmentation agent.

I found Zoloft made me feel pretty detatched
And brintellix even moreso....the combo doesn't do that to you?
