12 weeks of Nardil 75mg for SP- still not working!

Posted by Mickapoo on November 22, 2008, at 1:22:59

For the last 12 weeks I've been on Nardil, 75 mg, for generalized social phobia. It still hasn't worked for my phobia. I feel more energetic and positive, but my social phobia hasn't been touched. I've read such great things about Nardil and its efficacy in regards to SP. If it doesn't help now, do you think there would be much of a difference at 90 mg? Should I even bother?

Thank you for your time!

Not a Nardil expert but I'd go to 90mg or whatver the max theraputic dose is, MAYBE even above that. As long as you don't have any debilitating side effects. Eveyone is different; you might just respond to the highest doses.

Hi Mickapoo,
I haven't been on the board much lately and can't remember if you've tried any augmentation. I augment Nardil with clonazepam for social anxiety and get a good synergism with the two meds. They both affect GABA and I believe that is why they work well together for my social anxiety.

I just recently had to start Nardil again after being off the medication for several months. It sure was nice not having the side effects for a while, but unfortunately my major depression returned. Looks like I'm a Nardil lifer as it is the only antidepressant that has ever worked for me. I've been off of it four times in the past 11 years, and each time the major depression along with social anxiety has returned after several months.

I titrated up to 90mg fairly quickly this time as I knew what to expect in the way of side effects. Within one week the intense pain had gone away. Now, after about a month I would say that I'm pretty close to being in remission again. I always have a residual level of dysthymia, but I can live with that. I have for over 35 years. Oh, right now I'm using 2mg of clonazepam daily. Sometimes I can get away with 1mg when life's stressors aren't too bad.
Good Luck,
Jedi

Thanks everyone for your responses. I had to discontinue going to my pdoc because for one he wasn't helping me, and more importantly, I lost my health insurance and couldn't afford the appointments. After that I started to see my family doctor again, told him what was happening, and he agreed to start me on Nardil (per my request). Being up to 75 mg and it not helping at all, he said he didn't know what else to do and told me I really need to go see a psychiatrist. I haven't asked him to let me try 90 mg. I guess I'll have to go to my psychiatrist (well, nurse practitioner, they NEVER let you see the dr) and ask him about increasing the dose.

hey man,I'm in the same boat 11 1/2 weeks and no Sa relief, as you said your feeling positive dpression relief, I did at wes for to 5 at 75 mg, but then I was upped to 105, whci was too high for me and I had bad hypotension that lasted a month as I came back down to 75 where i've been there now 3 1/2 weeks. I also take 1mg of clonazepam 3x a day.

the thing is as one of the other guys said, you may be someone who can benefit from 105 mgs. But depending on how long youv'e been on 90mg, if only for a short while, you should maybe wait it out for like at least 2-3 weeks, and then up it. A good thing to do would be to talk to your docc. first.

hit me back and let me know your experience, what dose you started at, how long you were on each dose, when you felt positive effects, etc. Oh by the way do you get that crazy euphoria, when the drug started kicking in?

again I'm very intersted since we are pretty much on the same page.

oh, I made a mistake, yes you definately want to go to 90mg, that's the maximum dose man, it's possible that you may need tobe that high, and as I said higher doses has been known. I'm soon gonna up to 90 so if you do let me know that too, I'll also keep you posted.

great to see someone at the same point.

good luck to you.

I'm going to call around tomorrow and see if I can find a pdoc who can see me. I was with one about six or so months ago, and at that time he was trying to tackle my depression first, and once that was under control, he thought he'd try treating the SP. I lost my insurance, and I had to discontinue seeing him. He was too expensive and wanted to see me monthly. That is when I did my research, and went to my family dr, told him about my symptoms, and how I've tried everything under the sun, and he agreed to put me on Nardil at 45 mg. After 2 weeks the dose was increased to 60 mg. 3 weeks after that it was increased to 75 mg. Tomorrow it will be exactly 12 weeks at 75 mg. When I was first increased to 75, my energy level was much higher. I take 5 doses spread throughout the day. I tried taking two at once, but it made me very sedated. But then my family dr said you have to take 2 in the morning, 2 at noon, and 1 at night so your body receives that spike or surge. Anyway, it's been 12 weeks and still it has not helped. My family dr has told me he really isn't qualified to help me, and that I need to see s psychiatrist. So, right now I'm in the middle of trying to find someone with the local mental health facility who will see me. I'm going to muster up the courage tomorrow and call first thing in the morning. I hope that whoever I see will be willing to increase my dosage and not want to make me switch medications. I've just heard so many promising things about Nardil and it's treatment for SP. I never did experience any euphoria, just a slight increase in energy, which has since disipated :(
