Miracle Fruit

I just ordered a 5g pack. Sounds like a good alternative to artificial sweetners. It's supposed to be able to restore taste to people who have lost it by stimulating taste buds. I'm wondering if it has any psychoactive propeties? Will report back when I get it.

Taste buds respond to sweet, bitter, salty, and sour. So the fruite affects them. But what about other tastes like cereal, fruit, yougurt plain, meat, potatoes, vegtables. See I lost all my taste. Over four years ago and the experts said taste originated in the neurons of the nose so loss of taste is also loss of smell. Anything to restore all taste? Phillipa

Hi H1,

that was an interesting article. Thanks :)

Still - don't think I'll be trying "jellied eels" any time soon, no matter what they taste like..!

And Phillipa, there's a fifth taste apparently. It's called Umami. Never heard of it until recently. No magic cure for anything unfortunately - just a scientific oddity.

Hi Phillipa,

Do you mean, is Umami MSG? No, no - it's just like you said about there being sweet, salty, sour & bitter but "they've" discovered a 5th distinct taste now called Umami (which is described as savory, meaty, or brothy).

It was always there, just not recognised as a distinct "taste" class.

As I understand it, the connection with MSG is that it's your ability to taste Umami that explains why MSG works.

In regards to your loss of taste, I would definitely want to try some of those berries if it was me. Just don't think too much about the difference in price between what the poor African with the bush gets vs what you'll have to pay ;)

Do tell if you end up trying some...!
