nardil/ using contraindicatied products on purpose

Posted by mav27 on March 17, 2008, at 12:26:27

I've tried everything for my depression and social phobia.. the only thing that has had any promise is Nardil but the problem i keep having is my blood pressure drops too much on it to be able to do anything but lay down most of the time. On 30mg my pressure drops from its usual 140/100 to 70/40.. it causes a lot of blackouts/fainting. My doctor and psych both say there is nothing they can do to increase my pressure and pulse to normal other than using stimulants but no one around here will have anything to do with such a thing. So i was wondering, and i did ask my psych about it but he pretty much looked at me like he would kill me if i tried it :) what abut trying to get my pressure back to normal by carfully taking something with the nardil... something like psydoephedrine or other things you arn't meant to take with it (tyramine rich food ect)... do you think it's possible if carefull enough to balance it so i can get my blood pressure and heart rate back to normal levels whilst on the nardil ?
Or is it just way to stupid to attempt? I'm really at witts end though.

Does your doc think that nardil might not be the right med for you? I wouldn't try something that could cause a hypertensive crisis right? Phillipa

He thinks it's the right med for me, as do i. This is my third attempt at using nardil and the last 2 attempts both ended when the hypotension got too bad to function. It's been the only med to actually work though, i have been on every single ssri/snri/tricyclic/benzo and nothing has worked except nardil.. but i just can't beat the hypotension and bradycardia!

Oh Mav I hope a nardil expert answers your post. I wouldn't want to give advise about a subject so important. Love Phillipa ps don't take nardil.

Correction I don't take nardil not that you should not. I just read what I wrote and it sounded as if you shouldn't take it not so. Terrible mistake on my part. So sorry. Phillipa

Hi,
Sounds like your BP runs fairly low. Mine is borderline high without Nardil(140/80), with Nardil it runs about 132/72. My orthostatic hypotension went away fairly quickly after I started Nardil. One case report in PubMed has a woman treated successfully for hypotension with salt tablets.
Good Luck,
Jedi

Orthostatic hypotension, a serious, frequent side effect of antidepressant medication, can be severe enough to require cessation of medication. The authors report three cases of antidepressant-induced orthostatic hypotension treated with sodium chloride. In two of the cases, the use of sodium chloride allowed the patient to continue antidepressant treatment at a therapeutically effective dosage. The authors discuss risks and treatment of orthostatic hypotension.

Drinking a small cup of salt water every morning
works great for me on Parnate.

Thanks for the info! So far my BP is only down to 90/70... the fainting hasn't started yet. But i finally managed to find a pharmacy that was able to get in salt tablets for me! So thankfully i don't have to drink salt water. I will see how it goes at raising my pressure.

How about a very small dose of (pseudo)ephedrine. I must warn you that this is also contadicted and may lead to a hypertensive crisis if you are not careful with the dosage.
