Need opinions...LUNESTA or AMBIEN

Posted by tjeffries on October 4, 2005, at 17:53:10

Hi all, been on Ambien for years... and the effect has started to wear off.... My Psych. gave me some samples of Lunesta 3mg. and said to try those, or if I didn't like them she could just up my dose to 15 or 20 mg. of the Ambien. I have heard mixed responses about the Lunesta and I know it is fairly new.... what are your experiences with it??? Any weird side effects? Did it work for you? and I like the mello feeling and effect that the Ambien gave me, it was not to strong, you know what I mean? It helped me relax, so that I could sleep.... Is Lunesta mello like that, or will I "boom", just fall asleep right away??? Please let me know, cuz I was scared to try the Lunesta tonite....and just took 15mg. of Ambien instead.... thank you

Google Lunesta and ambien at the bottom of the meds board page. There have been a number of Threads on the two. Good luck. Fondly, Phillipa

Lunesta is good stuff...don't be afraid to try it :-) I hear its kinda ambien-ish...relaxing, etc...but it has some benefits, like it doesn't usually stop working after long-term use (its keeps working at the same dose for at least 6months) and it can actually help with depression, at least when added to some antidepressants (like Prozac). As sleeping pills go, its probably the gentlest, safest thing out there...side effects are rare, tolerance and dependence are very rare. If it doesn't work, your shrink can always just up the ambien or add something to the ambien...either way, you'll get the sleep you need. Good luck!

I haven't tried lunesta so I can't comment on how it works. But I do remember comments from other folks. A lot of people like it, say they sleep great. I think the only real complaint is that in about 20% of people they get a bad metallic taste in their mouth from it as a side effect. That supposedly goes away after breakfast, and supposedly goes away with continued use. From what I've heard, tolerance is not such a big issue with lunesta. I would like to try it myself one of these days.
