stiff and sore muscles

Posted by FredPotter on August 11, 2005, at 15:52:03

I have stiff and sore calf muscles making it painful to walk. Does anyone know if this is a side-effect of any of the drugs I take, lithium, Celexa, Zyprexa? Or is it old-age? Thanks
Fred

Hi Fred,

Could be a mild form of Parkinsonism due to the Zyprexa. Try reducing the dose if possible. If not, add an anticholinergic (eg. procyclidine) and see if it helps.

Common symptoms of antipsychotic-induced Parkinsonism include..... muscle stiffness/rigidity, a feeling of discomfort in the muscles, tremor, slowness of movement and difficulty initiating movement.

Kind regards

~Ed

Hi Fred,

I'm not sure that Periactin will be anticholinergic enough to help. Perhaps you could get a script for procyclidine or something like that.

Lexapro did this to me, mainly in neck and shoulders.

All SSRIs except Paxil did this to me - totally in my neck and shoulders. Prozac was the worst. I spent a fortune on nerve blocks, chiropractors, pain specialists and physical therapy before I switched to Effexor and it went almost completely away.
