gotta vent!

Posted by AntiTrust on September 25, 2004, at 18:38:37

I just seen my theripist two days ago-she said not to make another appointment because according to her "I do not want to change"
I asked her during the session-what is the plan?
I need something to 'bite into' when I leave her....she gives me... you need to listen to the tapes I gave you last winter, that you can not find that you do not listen too so you will never change beucase you dont want to.

so....
1. should I call and ask for another theripst on Monday morning?
2. should I tell the mental health unit to take a hike and find another??

(I am being treated for and DX w/ major depression and angoriaphobia w/ panic)

AntiTrust:

I'm thinking that your name, AntiTrust, may be a clue. Are you anti trust? You need to look inside and see if you're being honest with yourself. Are you resistant to change and/or the hard work that goes along with it? If so, it doesn't matter what therapist you see.

< you need to listen to the tapes I gave you last winter >

Did you avoid listening to the the tapes? Did you really lose them? Even if you did, you could have replaced them. Therapists can give us suggestions, provide some insight and prescribe medication. But the real work is up to each of you. Nobody can do it for you.

I listened to the tapes-quite a few times, they where about relaxation etc. I am relaxed mind you-i have this Angoraphobia and major depression going on-very meloncolly personality.

It's good that you recognize your resistance. Your therapist may be partially correct in not wanting to treat you any longer but her mode of treatment may be part of the problem. Maybe she's simply a lousy therapist, maybe you 2 are a bad match. Her reference to tapes she gave you LAST WINTER gave me the feeling that she may be stuck in a narrow groove regarding your treatment. I know little about phobias but I know a lot about major depression and melancholia. A good therapist should have the versatility to try various modes of treatment, including ways of dealing with resistance. Perhaps part of your resistance is because you don't like your therapist or her treatment doesn't make any sense to you. This isn't uncommon. Remember that you're the mental health consumer and like all consumers, have choices. My best suggestion is that you try another therapist and discuss your prior experiences and complaints as well as your condition. Again, remember that you are the consumer and have the right to expect respect and professional treatment.
