A LOT of reading (I have lost track of how much, honestly, too much time in the medical library ;) ), classes, and a caring psychopharmacology professor at a major university that continually answered my questions and pointed me in the right direction to learn more. I would not call myself an expert by any means, more an enthusiast.

I hope you're not asking this because you think I appear arrogant or something, I try not to sound that way because I don't have a right to be ...

I didn't mean my question to come off b*tchy or ugly sounding.
I really just wanted to know and thanks for answering.

No problem. I knew you probably weren't trying to come off that way; it's probably Wellbutrin-induced paranoia since I started that today. ;)

Hope you have good luck with WB... drug trials are the funniest, aren't they? (smile)

I was curious myself, Chairman. You appear to be a well read person and your posts are quite insightful.

Ditto- socialdeviantjeff's message. You're great. I don't think you come across arrogant and I like your perspective on life, meds. You're answers to my xyrem questions were helpful. To follow up with that, I saw a new psychiatrist yesterday who was a pharmacist before he went to medical school and has a certification in clinical psychopharmacology. More importantly, he was very kind and interested. He bumped up my lithium, kept me on zoloft and added seroquel- start at 25mg and flexible instructions for titration. I slept last night and feel fine today.

Thanks, I really appreciate your notes of praise, guys.

To allye: it is excellent that you found a doctor with those credentials. It's reassuring to know that your doctor actually KNOWS the drugs he's prescribing. I'm not saying that all psychiatrists don't--on the contrary, many I've had know an astounding amount. But I've had one doctor--one who was a decent psychiatrist, at that--who admitted during the second session that I probably knew more about many of the drugs he prescribed than he did. He was an excellent PSYCHOTHERAPIST, however, which for a psychiatrist is almost unheard of these days.

I also had an old Polish guy who started out as a D.O. (bone doctor), got a Ph.D. in psychology, years of psychodynamic training, became a therapist, and then decided to take all of his skills, wrap them up into one package, and become a clinical psychopharmacologist. Now that guy was awesome!

I actually hope to be a clinical psychopharmacologist someday--if I can manage the billion years of school needed to do so. ;)

Best wishes with your goals. Your personal journey will give you great compassion and understanding with your patients. I've been tempted myself because of all the incompetents out there - have a BS in biology, chem minor and scored low middle on the MCAT my only try - but am not truly scentifically inclined.

This post will probably get moved to social or faith, but keep the message of this scripture in mind as you pursue your goals. It's theme is universal regardless of your personal beliefs.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received... And our hope for you is firm"
