wellbutrin SR effects fading/not working

Posted by Paige on January 7, 2003, at 2:03:59

Maybe someone can help...first of all it is 3 am
which in an of itself is not fun (stress) and i wish Dr. Bb's would music would play most of the
time since it seems to cut out, makes for writing these sorts of things a little more bearable. I hope he reads this. To the point, so I can go back to sleep. I have been on and off WB SR for many years, not for great lengths. Could never take more than 150mg and doc and I decided to try and boost to 300--viola! No problems...very odd for me since I could never take that high of a dose with out bordering a breakdown. I also take (the music just stopped again) clonopin 2mg at night, which cuts back the insomnia, except this last night. I have not been on Wellbutrin for great lengths of time (like a year straight or so) and I do like the motivation and now lack of side effects from it and I dread SSRI (for me they did nothing). I have been weaning myself off WB because I feel it is doing nothing. It keeps me from smoking which is nice, but has anyone else felt it just vanishes from its initial effects this early on and do you know why? I could never take this high a dose and is also so outrageoulsy expensive, and it seems to have lost its kick. I have never had to raise the clonopin, which is unususal. I nver wanted either one of these and was just taking clonopin for past several years, but I agreed, or rather asked for help when my sister died this year. The WB has helped, but for depression? Does it cause some inability to focus for some people? I am in college and this is not good, but I still get by with good grades, just a wreck trying to concentrate. I don't know whether to get back on it (which I sense will happen) or forget all of these pills and really need a Wellbutrin SR person who might be able to help me,.....please, please, please.
Thank you,
Paige

Hi JYL,
Thanks for answering me. Are you on 300mg per day? I have
started again because things are not any better without it.
It used to last onger than this. Could it be you
build up a tolerance to the 150mg and then you tack on
another 150 mg per your doc and chemically that
extra 150mg is really only maintaining the original
150mg you started taking? Does that make any sense?
Do you take anything else? No, I really don't want to
go back to cigarettes, talk about a known depressant.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me (write me).

jyl,
no, alcohol would not be a good additive...esp
with Wellbutrin. I get too depressed when I have
had a drink, so I tend to avoid it. And being
on Wellbutrin and Klonopin combo would not mix
with alcohol. I hope you succeed in staying
away from it. I really do. Things are hard enough
as it is. I, too, was hoping Wellbutrin would
be better than the rest and for the most part it
has been, but as of late it just covers the surface
and it never did that before. Keep me posted.
Thanks-P.

I've been on WellbutrinSR for two years, but lately I've noticed that it's lost its potency, too. I've read in old psycho-babble posts that it may be that your body raises the level of MAO-B enzymes to break down what it perceives as too high a level of dopamine. Argh! I ordered Deprenyl (a MAO-B inhibitor) to try and revive the Wellbutrin effectiveness. I'll post when I get it and tell you how it works :)

Thank you for telling me this. I am actually glad
to hear it has been two years. At least you got
that much time out of it. How do you know it has
faded? May sound silly, but I would be curious.
I have never heard of this MAO-b enzymes and will
look it up. Yes, please let me know how this works.
It gets to be a drag taking all these pills. I
only take the 2 wellbutrin and was taking 2 Klonopin
at night, but have decided I need to start a cut
back on that one. Sleep will be an issue, but I would
prefer to give them all up. Thanks again.

We can't get that here in the U.S. I did a little
quick research. I wonder if there is some form of
supplement (vitamin) amino acid type something or
other that would be some sort of close cousin, sort
of. Ah the FDA.....approve nicotine and all sorts
of wonderful things, but careful if it's something
that dare competes with the almighty pharma
industry here in the U.S. Sorry- but it really
is absurd. I wish the cover would get blown off the top
of that industry just like the Enron's of the world.
Maybe in time, but they have a lot of power and
drugs that might help? Can't get those here, sorry.
Well, maybe there is something similar here. I will
have to keep looking. Sorry- I am an incessant writer.

"How do you know it has faded? "
I started taking it for depression, low energy, ADD, and stimulant addiction. Wellbutrin gave me a sense of euphoria, a better ablity to concentrate, and my cravings mostly vanished. A few months ago, I again became very sleepy and unmotivated, unfocused, depressed, and my drug cravings came back HARDCORE. I still am a little better than before I started, but something definitely isn't right.
You said that it gives you some concentration problems... a friend stopped taking it because of that. If I take a lower dose, it increases my concentration, but at a higher dose it feels like my head is full of cotton :/

As for the Deprenyl, I live in the US too. I ordered it from a company in England. I agree with what you say about the drug industry, it's ridiculous. If you do a search on psycho-babble's posts for Deprenyl, you can find some old conversations about it. Supposedly you also have to take phenylalanine with it in order for it to work - phenylalanine is an amino acid that is the precursor to NE and DA. I'm excited that Deprenyl greatly increases the levels of phenylethylalanine in the brain too. Mmm chocolate.

As for supplements you don't have to order from other countries:
*phenylalanine - taking it (even without deprenyl) should help increase levels of NE and DA.
*omega-3 fish oil
*choline - precursor to Acetylcholine, another activating neurotransmitter
*inositol - a B vitamin
*vincamine/vinpocetine - a "smart drug", works like gingko biloba, increasing blood flow to the brain

I started taking all the above recently and I feel a little better as far as the depression goes. But I look forward to taking the Deprenyl because (like Wellbutrin) it's supposed to reduce cravings... and the cravings are still pretty bad.

I'm glad someone else likes it, too! :-) It's *supposed* to keep repeating (unless you turn it off). Are you using Internet Explorer and Windows? I guess I should ask you to redirect your reply to Psycho-Babble Administration...

Sorry, I haven't read this entire thread, but I noticed that you said you were ordering Deprenyl from England. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, unless something has changed, that medicine is available in the U.S. under the name Selegiline or Eldepryl. It is used for Parkinson's Disease, but is also an MAOI antidepressant.

Paige,
We CAN get Deprenyl here in the US, by Rx under the brand name Eldepryl (selegine HCl), also by ordering it from a more rational country where it will cost you much less money. (its not a controlled substance.) I have used it very effectively for bipolar depression at 20 mg/day.
