Subject lines written entirely in capital letters.

Posted by mist on August 17, 2002, at 10:36:53

Please don't type your subject lines or posts in all CAPS (upper case letters). While you may not intend it this way, according to internet etiquette it's considered shouting and attention grabbing (therefore rude). It's also uncomfortable to look at on a board like this.

Thank you.

I don't think people type in caps because they are rude. Perhaps they want to be sure that their post stands out among the many others and is read.

Everyone wants their posts to be read (otherwise they wouldn't have posted). If posting subject lines in caps causes their post to be read at the expense of another equally deserving post, then it strikes me as a selfish and unfair practice.

I agree they don't intend to be rude. Not everyone is used to the internet, which is why I and others have pointed out meaning that all caps have according to "netiquette," and the effect they can have on other posters and visitors to the board.

Mist--Your request was well-stated imo, and informative re how all caps are perceived. Tina made a this request earlier in the threads, also. Maybe it needs to be said in all caps.

It's considered by many to be the way to shout online, but it's also understandable that posters might want to "grab" some attention. As Bekka said:

I myself do find text all in caps harder to read. What do you think?

I MYSELF DO FIND TEXT ALL IN CAPS HARDER TO READ. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Also, see, for example:

> When text is set in all capital letters, reading speed is slowed about 13 to 20 percent. Reading speed is optimal when uppercase and lowercase letters are used.

So IMO, it's a tradeoff. Some people may be more likely to click on it because it does stand out more, but others may be more likely to skip it because they find it less readable (or consider it rude).

Posters should be aware of the above, but are in the end free to do it either way. I'd like the focus here to be on support and education rather than on rules. Thanks, and further discussion of this should go to Psycho-Babble Administration.
