How Long does Effexor Take to Work? Feel suicial

Posted by shelliR on March 30, 2002, at 15:36:21

I am very suicidal; The only AD I haven't really tried is effexor. Actually I am ready to give up but I am afraid that my family won't get over it.

So if I try effexor again, how long has it taken for people to feel its anti-depression effects. Last time I threw up on one pill and 1/2 of one pill.

TIA,

Shelli

Hi:

I deeply empathize with your Effexor experience. Are you on the 'XR' (extended release..1x a day..in a capsule) or regular (pill form..2-3x a day)? How many mg's?

Did your doctor give you anything to help with anxiety, like klonipin or anything like that?

Please keep on posting...

I am very sorry and alarmed that you are feeling very suicidal - please do NOT do anything to act on these feelings. Call a loved one, call 911, but HANG IN THERE.

As far as Effexor is concerned, I've been on EffexorXR for about a year now but I get the impression since you said you had thrown up one pill and then 1/2 pill, that you may have taken regular Effexor (not the extended release capsules).

I have heard that Effexor (either version) can cause stomach upset, and the way to get around it is to eat something substantial before taking it. Had you taken it on an empty stomach by any chance? If so, that's probably why you couldn't hold it down.

Even if you had taken it on a full stomach, I would say try again before giving up on it. Maybe it was just a fluke reaction you had at the time.

Best of luck.

I haven't start it yet, but how long did it take you to feel anything when you started effexor? I Haven't started it yet; I hurt so much, I am trying to look for hope. Bupre abd vicodin stoped working. I am also up to 450mg on limical, but it hasn't kicked it.

Do you have any ideas about why the bupe-vicodin stopped working? How long have you been trying lamictal? I thought it was supposed to kick in fairly quickly. Has effexor been suggested to augment everything else you are trying? I thought you also hadn't tried remeron. I know one person who had absolutely no success with anything else but remeron.

> Do you have any ideas about why the bupe-vicodin stopped working?<

probably I've become habituated like other opiates.
actually, I took all I had left (not very many) today, and I'm back to the land of the living. Not all the way back, but more relief than I've had in the last few days. (I was actually able to go out of my house this morning, and ate cereal--first food other than two pieces of toast in several days) Hopefully the buprenorphine I ordered with come either tomorrow or Tuesday.

Last time it took quite a while for the lamictal to kick in. I remember calling my pdoc and thinking it was so long I should give up. She told me to stay with it and it did finally kick in at 400mg. But that was in conjunction with nardil. That was after it working at 200mg first. So I'm willing to go up to 600mg (Ivan Goldbergs ceililng)

From doing some reading, I just think that I have a better chance on effexor. I think if the lamictal doesn't kick it when I'm at 600mg (Ivan Goldberg's ceiling) then I'll be seriously looking into effexor or something else. I've never been successful on any ssri. But I think the bupe definately needs to be argumented; it's not supposed to carry the whole load.

Plus I think a lot of what I feel is horrible pressure in my chest and I'm going to a pain doctor in a few weeks (first app't available) to get a corisone shot in my chestt). And if I can get my records together AND IF I'm accepted by them, I'll go to a pain clinic, where I know they use narcotics if necessary. I'm also going to start estrogen. I wanted to wait until I had given the lamictal a full chance, but I think I probably should approach this from all angles.

Thanks for the suggestion of remeron.

Shelli
